ReplyDeleteI am going to pick 3 photos from Elena Kalis's collection of underwater photography called "Alice in Waterland." Originally I knew I wanted to pick photography (as opposed to fine art or film) because I am very drawn to photography in general and I relly enjoyed Susan Sontag's article. I chose "Alice in Waterland" specifically because the images are awe-inspiring and different from anything I have ever seen before. I want to delve deeper into why the story of Alice in Wonderland is so cherished in American culture; why it is enjoyable for all ages; why it has withstood the test of time; and why Elena Kalis wanted to make her own interpretation of this story in underwater still images.
My paper will hopefully resemble this:
Thesis:
Elena Kalis, in her interpretation of the story Alice in Wonderland, uses underwater photography because the nature of sub-mergence and water- higher viscosity than air, depth, and reflection - are representative of the human subconscious that Alice explores.
Topic sentence 1: The quality of water to impede movement is symbolic of the way Alice moves through her own mind as she falls down the rabbit hole into her subconscious.
-This is demonstrated through the body
positioning of "Alice" in the photo
where she is falling down the rabbit
hole. Her limbs are stretched in way
that implies the water is resisting her
movement - her subconciousis not easy to
flow through.
-Her facial expression of fear and
hopelessness displays resistance in a
different way because no matter how much
she resists the fall, it is inevitable.
Topic Sentence #2: A two-dimensional photo taken underwater has the ability to show three dimensions very easily; this gives the audience a feeling of depth, of how deep Alice has fallen.
Topic Sentence #3: Reflection is a major theme in the collection of Alice in Waterland, Alice falls through a mirror and is surrounded by water - the world she falls into is a reflection of herself.
This site has the photos from the collection:

For my paper I intend to analyze the movie Cruel Intentions. I decided to do a film because I am a huge movie buff and Cruel Intentions is one of my favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteI have done a little outlining of my paper, but might revise some of it along the way. So far this is what I have:
Thesis: The film Cruel Intentions takes away the typical stereotypes of Upper East Side prep school kids, and depicts them in a much more complex way by using an elaborate plot, captivating characters, and well thought out sets, locations, and props.
Intro
Topic Sentence 1 (Plot Analysis): Cruel Intentions contains an intense plot about five characters entangled in lies, deception, and love.
Topic Sentence 2 (Character Analysis): In the movie, the characters are complex and have complicated relationships with one another.
Topic Sentence 3 (set and location): The film uses certain set designs and different locations in New York to help set the stage for everything.
Topic Sentence 4 (Use of props, colors, etc.): The creators of Cruel Intentions use certain props, such as Sebastian's journal, and colors such as the colors of character's bedrooms to help explain the characters and add to the plot.

ReplyDeleteFor my paper, I found two fashion advertisement photos from Sisley. I have found these pictures to be very insulting. My ideas are to analyze the photos and get down to the meaning of both photos. I knew I wanted to pick something that had to do with fashion because I am very interested in it. When I was researching and found these photos I was immediately drawn to them. I have never heard of this brand until these photos and I now find myself asking why would anyone want to get their clothes from here?
Thesis Statement-
Sisley’s objective is to represent a recognizable image in the fashion world, and their advertising campaign is said to create an image and lifestyle different from other crowds.
Body Paragraph #1-
Sisley is choosing a different approach in the fashion world, and their definitely making a name for themselves. But how much is too much?
Body Paragraph #2-
The idea of this girl looking lie she’s “snorting” the shirt threw a straw, gives off an image that she is doing drugs, it also represents something else.
Body Paragraph #3-
Both images have some of the same ideas and create the same sort of lifestyle, but are also different.
This is just one of the images I am choosing to research.

When you mentioned we could compare two paintings, the Birth of Venus was the first thing that popped into my head. It is one of my favorite paintings, and I felt that I could talk about a lot of underlying motifs and analyze both paintings from a sociological and an artistic perspective. Instead of doing a topic sentence, I just put what I would talk about in the body paragraphs because I‘m kind of confused on what angle I should write this paper from and wanted to talk to you about that.
ReplyDeleteThesis: Throughout the centuries, The Birth of Venus has become an iconic artistic medium. As a symbol of femininity in its purest, artists have taken this beautiful mythological tale and transformed it into a subtle reflection of their current social characteristics in society. By comparing the two paintings of Botticelli and Bouguereau from an sociological perspective, viewers can understand the paintings various interpretations based off the historical characteristics of society during the time these paintings were created.
Body #1: Botticelli’s version of the Birth of Venus was painted in the 15th century: describe the society’s social, economical, and political state and how these characteristics are presented in his version of the painting.
Body #2: Bouguereau’s version of the Birth of Venus was painted in the 19th century: describe the society’s social, economical, and political state and how these characteristics are presented in his version of the painting.
Body #3: Compare both Botticelli and Bouguereau’s paintings from a artistic perspective, using visual motifs, analysis of the painting, and symbolism presented in the painting. Incorporating historical information to support this comparison and its affect on the artists decision for the painting and the final product.

For my paper i will be discussing Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. Bamboozled is one of my all time favorite movies so I decided to check out some of his other stuff. I watched this movie and was really intrigued by the way Spike Lee puts his own twists on his movie. You can always tell that it is him who is directing, he uses a specific style that is always noticeable. The movie itself is very powerful, but the way he films it gives it more of an edge.
ReplyDeleteThesis: Through the use of music, camera angles, reoccurring shots and characters, Spike Lee is able to represent the different social issues in a versatile community.
Paragraph 1: The way Lee shoots the characters. Some are filmed at eye level, so we can see it through their eyes. Some are filmed from a lower angle and some filmed from up above. He uses long shots and reoccurring shots.
Paragraph 2: Music. Different Groups are always listening to their own type of music. The Italians, the Latino's and Radio Raheem. Neither groups are willing to compromise to listen to the others music, creating more problems. Lee's reoccurring use of the song "Fight the Power"
Paragraph 3: Lee has a lot of different characters in the movie. Some seem important and some don't. Lee uses these versatile people in their small neighborhood to represent a smaller subdivision of the world. All types of people struggling to live in harmony with each other.
Paragraph 4: Makes his movie into his own version of a narrative by using DJ Mister Senor Love Daddy who is a Disc Jockey and constantly commenting on the weather and the way people are acting. The DJ also incorporate more music into the movie.

ReplyDeleteFor my paper, I decided to focus on Darren Aronofsky’s film, Requiem For A Dream. I chose this film because whenever I think of any film that has an extraordinary amount of depth, meaning, and messages, I think of this film. For my paper, I’d like to focus on each of the four main characters, the first being the mother, the son, his girlfriend, and his longtime friend. I’d like to focus on how each of these characters descends into darkness more and more each time we see them on film as the movie progresses. My main thesis will be that Aronofsky is trying to prove that it doesn’t matter what type of drug an individual uses; anything could be a drug. This means television could be a drug, causing a seemingly normal person to screw up his/her entire life.
Throughout the characters, I will discuss the several themes throughout the movie, and will first talk about the use of color in the film. The second will focus on the millions of camera angles shot and the camera work, and how they each depict the feeling of a character in whatever mental state he/she is in. That will also include mise en scene as well. The third will focus on the comparisons of the characters and how they interact with each other before the drugs, and then after.
For my paper, I really wanted to analyze a song because I absolutely love going into the meaning behind different music. I decided that I would analyze not only a song, but a music video and seeing how they played key roles in complimenting one another. I have too many songs that I would love to go into depth with and knew I would be searching for hours and hours, so what I did was randomly chose a song and music video off of MTV.com which happened to be a song I really liked. The song and music video I chose was Brick by Boring Brick by Paramore. What I also didn’t realize, is how much the song reminded me of myself and my life.
ReplyDeleteThesis statement: This song is about people who cover up their reality with frills and make out like they're living a fantasy life. It's one thing to have goals and dreams but it's another thing when you never know where you're standing in the real world. People can be hurt by that.
Body paragraph 1: Lyrically analyzing the song and its meaning.
Body paragraph 2: Visually analyzing the video imagery and what it is that the images are saying, the story it is telling. (no sound when analyzing)
Body paragraph 3: Lyrically and visually analyzing the two together. What emotions are conveyed, feelings, theme, the entire meaning.

For my essay, I would like to analyze the movie Serendipity. This movie has many underlying messages and the director did a great job of foreshadowing and creating the perfect scenes for the movie. The foundation of the movie is fate. Two strangers met while ironically buying presents for their significant others. Throughout the movie, little things remind each character of the stranger they met that day and they travel back to the city where they met, hoping that destiny will reunite them. They continue to ALMOST cross paths and the movie holds classic confusion where each character is closer than they think. Eventually they find each other again and believe they are soul mates.
ReplyDeleteThesis: Once in a lifetime opportunities can happen twice.
Topic #1: The setting is set in New York City; possibly the busiest city in the United States where it is almost impossible to find someone you know very well, let alone a complete stranger.
Topic #2: The name of the characters and their ironic relation to fate: Sara, Jonathan, Josh, Halley, Courtney
Topic #3: There are little hints that foreshadow events in the movie. Ex. Jon and Sara meet five days before Christmas then Sara writes Jon’s number on the back of a five dollar bill, the first place they eat at is called Serendipity, etc.

ReplyDeleteThe advertising industry studies human behavior and their reactions as a guide to getting their attention according to what they are interested in. Businesses target people in different categories depending on what they are trying to sell, for example, cigarette companies target a young crowd that is vulnerable in order to get and keep their business. In order to be successful an advertisement must touch on a good amount of society's interests.
thesis
Sexual advertising is the most successful because it catches the majority of societies attention.
body paragraph 1
Even if a product is directed towards a man, sexual advertisement will make it appealing to woman also.
body paragraph 2
Putting both a male and a female in an advertisement and that will also get both gender’s attention.
body paragraph 3
If a product is directed towards a woman using a man in an advertisement, still, if the advertisement uses “sex sells” it will get a mans attention also out of jealousy.
I have chosen to analyze the movie “Requiem for a Dream” for my paper. Not only does is this movie symbolic of our society today, the film is able to develop strong bonds between the audience and the characters as we witness their lives spinning out of control.
ReplyDeleteThesis: Through the use of creative camera angles, an enticing score and an intricate set design the film “Requiem for a Dream” is able to pull viewers into an emotional whirlwind as a strong bond builds between the audience and characters.
Body Paragraph 1: The camera angles used throughout the film bring the audience up close and personal with the character allowing them to feel as if they are personally experiencing the emotion.
Body Paragraph 2: Body language is a very strong factor in this movie (example: The final scene where all four main characters are seen curling into the fetal position)
Body Paragraph 3: The set design and props play a large role in conveying the deterioration of the characters lives (Sarah think her refrigerator is movie across the room). Prop also play a very large roll in conveying the experience of being high to the audience.
Body Paragraph 4: Colors such as Sarah’s red dress are symbolic throughout the movie. Sarah feels that if she can lose enough weight and fit into her dress again she will no longer be lonely. In this case instead of red representing a negative thing it represents the love Sarah desires.

For my paper, I have decided to analyze the movie Fight Club. This movie has many underlying messages and an ironic twist at the end. Fight Club is a movie that truly depicts the measures some people will take to find a sense of identity within them. A main theme of the movie is materialism, something that very much relates to society today. I plan to discuss the filming techniques used, such as when the camera pans over the narrator’s apartment and all you can hear is the voice over, or the small almost unnoticeable splices of Tyler Durden that are squeezed in between scenes. I also plan to talk a lot about the setting (especially the apartment that got blown up and the abandoned house they live in and the basement where “fight club” takes place) and the wardrobe chosen for the two main characters and how it changes as the characters personalities change. I must view the movie again, paying more attention to the film techniques, before I can write my thesis/body paragraphs.

ReplyDeleteIn this advertisement of Dolce and Gabbana, the black and white effect adds a very old fashioned look to the ad, while Madonna is known as one of the most famous women in the world and she is photoed in a very grungy and dirty looking home, washing dishes, when advertising for a company that sells clothes.
Body Paragraph #1:
The black and white effects to many advertisements make viewers focus on the actual photo and what is going on in the photo.
Body Paragraph #2:
Madonna despite being known for being the queen of pop music, is washing dishes in a grungy old kitchen, but advertising for a very famous and expensive clothing designer.
Body paragraph #3:
Madonna’s facial expression in this picture gives a sense of shock or surprise across her face that is very mysterious to viewers.

I am going to analyze the movie where the wild things are and talk about how it relates to imagination and the spirit of childhood.
ReplyDeleteThesis: Where the wild things are exploits the raw imagination and seemingly endless possibilities of childhood through a dream land that represents life to come with aspects of success and failure.
Paragraph 1: all the "wild things" on the island represented facets of max himself, or children in general. They also act like teachers and are the physical form of max's conciense.
Paragraph 2: throughout the movie max uses imagination and fantasy to escape fear and reality.
Paragraph 3: The Scenery throughout the movie helps to develop the mood with wide open spaces hinting at freedom and curiosity.
Paragraph 4: In the end of the movie max comes back to reality but takes the lessons he learned in this imaginary life, this makes the connection between fantasy and reality and the recognition that one supports the other but you cannot accomplish anything in a fantasy world.
For my midterm paper I have decided to choose an episode form the Showtime television series The L word.
ReplyDeleteThesis: In the show The L-Word, each character has a distinct personality that is not only portrayed through their actions but can be distinguished by the audience through their appearance as well. In this television show the gay and lesbian community is exemplified in a particular way using specific locations, colors and props.
Topic sentence 1: In the Show the L word the characters each have their own particular style and personality. The design of each set can have relevance to each of the characters.
Topic Sentence 2: Where the show takes place is a major aspect of the depiction of the gay and lesbian community. The show depicts gays and lesbians in a way that may not be exemplified in real life.
Topic Sentence 3: Using different camera angles and shots the portrayal of the characters are altered. The coloring and lighting that is used throughout the show also has an impact on the way the characters are represented.
I will be writing my paper about the movie The Dark Knight. I choose this movie because I think there is more to the movie than what meets the eye and would like to analyze it like we did in class with Insomnia. The Dark Knight like everyone knows is about Batman fighting the Joker but through out the movie Batman is faced with a host of different situations he must face and conquer. There are also more underlined messages in the movie that I want to explore and give my side of what I think people are missing.
ReplyDeleteThesis Statement: The set/lighting, character, colors, location, archetype, all add to a different and new understanding of the movie the Dark Knight, for it allows a person to really analyze and solver what the movie is hiding.
Body Paragraph 1 Topic sentence: Sets and Lighting for the Dark Knight only adds to the movie experience, especially when the lighting is Dark and mysterious and foreboding death, and danger, as well as hides the secrets Batman and Harvey Dent carry.
Body Paragraph2. Topic Sentence. Colors in movies can show illuminate more and show the details a movie is trying to show the viewer as well as show in more detail about the character and the mood of the character and the movie.
Body paragraph 3 Topic Sentence. There are many archytypes in this movie like the old man, Alfred, the Damsel in distress, and protagonist, and antagonist, conflict and much more that The Dark Knight includes in it.

For my thesis paper I would like to analyze one of my favorite movies, “Garden State.” I feel like this movie has a lot to offer as far as lessons you can learn from the movie and help people find paths to their true self.
Thesis: The movie “Garden State” is a film based on true stories about how life events can directly effect the growth of young adults and how some times medications are not always the answer to problems.
Topic #1: In the beginning of the movie Zack Braff’s character wakes from a terrifying dream feeling nothing when he hears that his mother has died. The reason why he feels nothing isn’t because he’s a feeling-less person, it’s because the medications he’s been taking for the majority of his life have hindered his ability to show emotion for anything. Later on in the movie a doctor agrees that he probably shouldn’t be taking these medications for as long as he has been. Point being, medications are not always the answer.
Topic #2: While Zack Braff’s character is in this doctors office, the doc points out some very useful information. He tells Zack that even though he can take these medications all his life, what ever has been bothering him will always find a way to pop it’s head out one way or another. When disturbing and terrible or tragic things happen in a person’s life, it’s very important to find a way to deal with them as soon as possible. And when people ignore these issues, it makes it very difficult to move on in life and find happiness with in.
So far, these are my ideas and if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

ReplyDeleteI have chosen three photos from different artists to analyze in my paper. All three of the photos have a form of sadness in them.
With any luck my paper will resemble this format:
Thesis:
Different types of sadness that are hard for us to overcome and we feel trapped and unable to free ourselves from them.
Topic sentence 1-3: I will analyze the colors, woman’s postures, and the objects in the pictures to show the sadness.
Conclusion: revised the thesis and state some facts about depression, which is caused by sadness.
